Bergamo, Brescia and Lake Iseo Itinerary

6 Days, 5 nights, 4th-9th October 2020

Lake Iseo is a small lake between Lake Como and Lake Garda. This tour takes in sites and sights less travelled by even the most knowledgeable visitor to Italy. We will fly direct from Stansted to Bergamo (Ryanair), and each venue is within an hour or so by coach so travel time throughout the tour is kept to a minimum.

There is a wealth of art and history set in stunning mountain and lake scenery: tiny medieval streets, Romanesque churches, paintings and frescoes, Roman ruins, 11,000 year-old rock carvings, UNESCO World Heritage sites, sparkling Franciacorta wines, lake fish, Gran Padano and Taleggio cheeses.

1st Day:

Coach from King’s Lynn to Stansted for direct flight to Bergamo (or find your own way to Stansted). Stay one night in Bergamo. Group Welcome dinner at hotel.

2nd Day:

Walking tour of main sights in Citta Alta (the ancient upper city of Bergamo). Surrounded by the 16th-century Venetian Walls, the medieval Città Alta is dominated by the Rocca di Bergamo fortress. Handsome piazzas house the arcaded Palazzo della Ragione, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore with its gilded interior, and the intricate marble facade of the Cappella Colleoni. Narrow alleys are lined with upscale indie boutiques and delis, as well as centuries-old cafes, trattorias, and wine bars. Lunch on your own in Citta Alta.

Afternoon, visit to Galleria dell’Accademia Carrara for works by Lotto, Pisanello, Bellini, Mantegna, etc. Back on coach and visit to Suardi Oratorio at Trescore Balneario for Lotto frescoes. Coach to hotel on Lake Iseo for four night stay at Hotel Lovere. Dinner on your own either at hotel or explore the town of Lovere.

3rd Day:

Coach to Capo Di Ponte, to view 11,000 year old rock carvings. Entrance to the Prehistoric Museum and guided tour of rock carvings at Cemmo National Archaeological Park and Parco Archeologico Communale Di Seradina-Beddina. 3-Course Group Lunch.

Return to Lovere and free time to to stroll around Lovere, named by Lady Mary Wortley Montagu in the 18th Century (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_Mary_Wortley_Montagu)  as “the most beautiful place on earth.”

4th Day:

Ferry trip across the lake to Monte Isola – the island in the middle of Lake Iseo. Stroll around the village of Peschiera Maraglio and choose one of the many restaurants or cafes for lunch on your own. Afternoon coach trip to winery to taste Franciacorta sparkling wines

5th Day:

Coach to Pisogne to view the Romanino frescoes at the Chiesa di S. Maria delle Neve. Then coach to Brescia.  Guided tour of the highlights of Brescia explore for yourself. Things to see: The Roman Capitoline temple, the vast Santa Giulia museum complex, The Old Cathedral, numerous churches, etc.

Return to Hotel for Group Dinner in the Evening.

6th Day:

Short drive back to Bergamo airport and journey home.

Access

Members should be aware that although there will be uneven surfaces and some slopes in towns, most of the places we visit will be relatively flat. In Capo Di Ponte, everyone will be able to access at least some of the rock carvings and the two museums. Access to the more abundant rock carvings will be up a steep cobbled lane to a grassy area with hillocks and dips.
